In late 2006/Early 2007, we undertook the challenge of relocating the Wolfe family barn in Lakeville, Indiana. This majestic barn
has fully hewn primary timbers, half-round joist hay lofts, and a central threshing bay. The barn had been moved by a local moving
crew by lifting the posts on primary steel "needles". It was our challenge to re-cut the bottoms of
all the timber posts in the structure, to restore them to a functional condition. Years of use had led to the rot and failure of the
majority of the post bottoms. The interior loft posts had also failed, and we re-created posts and bolsters from historic materials in-situ.
New White Oak sills were milled, cut, and installed to match the original sills in all but finish, and
the barn was lowered into it's new shoes. We imported Ohio sandstone blocks salvaged from other historic barn sites to accommodate
the mid-bent posts on the new concrete foundation. Today, the barn is the center point of a learning farm for local children's groups
in the area.
